Fear and Loathing is the new album by Syllabolix heavyweights Hunter and Mortar. Never have two artists battled against such overwhelming odds and risen above all expectations, low as they may be, to shine like two beacons of light on a dark desert highway. They have clawed their way from the depths of hell, turned around and stormed back into the mouth of madness, hell-bent on bringing joy to the masses, wisdom to the unenlightened, hope to the hopeless and on occasion booze to the party, but don’t count on it. In fact you can disregard the last statement altogether. During the making of the album, both artists have undergone life changing afflictions, both have had to leave behind their reckless ways and plunge into a world of doctor’s appointments, blood tests, scans, pills, more pills and more problems. In late 2009 while Mortar was at the end of a six month leave from work due to illness, Hunter called him while on tour to say he was in hospital and the diagnosis was grim. Neuro Endocrine cancer of the pancreas with metastasis to liver , a terminal diagnosis. Time was marching, and an album had to be finished. Thus began the end of an epic journey. We had also finished listening to all the albums we had made in the past. Mortars two solo efforts (Mortarshell Symphony in 2007 and Sacred Geometry 2008) plus the 3 Clandestien Albums (Clandestien 2002, Dynasty 2005 and Chasms of the Citadel 2008) and Hunters albums (DoneDL 2003, Going Back to Yokine 2006 and Monster House 2010). So really we had little choice but to turn the mic on and spewforth the Fear and Loathing within. Joining Hunter and Mortar on this journey into the vortex are fellow SBX stalwarts Dazastah and Optamus as they hit the road headed for Hades. Fellow traveller Flash One rides shotgun on a drug fuelled (prescription of course) blind-run through a gauntlet of swooping demons. It’s not all doom and gloom however, there is light at the end of the tunnel as the two are joined by the ARIA award winning Hilltop Hoods, as well as SBX’s mighty queen Layla and the kid Graphic on a bizarre detour through bat country sure to leave you feeling a little light-headed. Handling all driving duties on the beats is Mortar with DJ Defyre thumbing a lift to help navigate on the deck duties. So I guess you’re about ready then. As they say, buy the ticket, take the ride.
