Heads of State are the “all-star” crew of the S.L.U.T Productions roster.
Made up of MCs Dunn D & mdusu (who also handles the production duties), and DJs Dameza & Grotesque, they were formed in 2004, when Dunn & Duse would catch up frequently to get wasted.
In-between beers & bowls, Duse would show Dunn some of the beats that he’d been messing about with, and the two would write lyrics about all sorts of crap, whether it be personal stuff, battle styles, social/political rants, or even just some “my dick’s bigger than yours” bragging ish.
Most of the resulting tunes were sweet, so they decided to turn it into a side project (as Duse was busy with mdusu&dameza , and Dunn was cranking it with Unleash the Nugget).
The next step was to get a DJ. It was only ever going to be a choice between Dameza & Grotesque (both good mates with Dunn & Duse, both dope DJs, both loved beer), and after getting ripped at Duse’s one night, the MCs thought “F**k it, let’s have two DJs”. Thus the crew was born…
Originally called DaMaGeD Goods (the boys’ first initials, for the slow members of the audience), they changed their name in late 2005, after hearing that another crew from Victoria had the same name (and weren’t doing much with it…). Luckily (or rather, skilfully) the new name was heaps better, and easily fit into their lyrics/vocal samples/artwork etc.
Since those early days, the crew (and individual members) have gone on to support some of the world’s best acts, including De la Soul, Blackalicious, Jungle Brothers, Z-Trip, Swollen Members, DJ Format, Jurassic 5, Ugly Duckling, Mix Master Mike, DJ Dexter, Hilltop Hoods, Pegz, Muph + Plutonic, Funkoars, The Herd, Bliss n Eso etc.
Heads of State have recently released their debut LP, titled Making the Best of What We’ve Got (distributed through Obese Records, and available in independent hip hop stores & JB HiFi across Australia and New Zealand. If your local store doesn’t have it, get them to order it!). They’ve also got a bunch of dope merch (T-Shirts, Hoodies, Sweaters etc), which will be up onsite soon.
If you need to know any more, just hit us up with a message, or come to one of our shows…BLAOW!!!
